LED Puck Lights vs LED Strip Lights for Cabinets: Which Should You Choose?

Table of Content [Hide]

A cabinet with one display object on each shelf and a long kitchen worktop need different lighting layouts. Puck lights let you place separate fittings around individual bays or objects. Strip lights create a line of light along a shelf or work surface. The choice starts with the area you want to illuminate, followed by the furniture dimensions and the complete lighting assembly.

    Quick Answer: Puck or Strip?

Choose puck lights for separate cabinet bays or individual display items. Choose strip lights for illumination along a continuous shelf or worktop. Check the actual optics: a round puck can have a focused beam or a soft diffused face, while a strip's appearance depends on its LEDs, cover and installed position.

Puck vs Strip: What Are You Actually Comparing?

The word puck describes a compact round fitting, rather than one particular beam pattern. ARTCILUX's LED cabinet spotlight range includes both focusing designs and softer surface-emitting models.

LED strip lighting can mean flexible LED tape or a finished linear fitting with its own housing and cover. Compare complete assemblies. A bare strip may still need a profile, diffuser and connectors; a finished cabinet strip light may already incorporate those parts.

Light appearanceMay be a focused beam or a diffused glow. Round shape alone does not establish the effect.May show separate LED points or a blended line, depending on LED spacing, cover and viewing angle.

Three Furniture Layouts That Lead to Different Choices

These ARTCILUX models illustrate why the furniture layout matters more than a simple round-versus-linear preference.

    LAYOUT 1 / A SINGLE DISPLAY OBJECT

Use a Focusing Puck When the Object Is the Priority

For a sculpture, ornament or selected piece of merchandise, consider where the light should land on the object. A focusing fitting gives you a way to review that area without extending a light source across the whole shelf.

ARTCILUX A1118 is listed at 12V and 1W, with a 15-60 degree focusing range and recessed installation. Check the distance to the item, its height and the viewer's position before choosing the beam setting.

The deciding check: Does the beam cover the intended object without leaving its important surfaces in shadow or creating an unwanted reflection?

LAYOUT 2 / SEPARATE STORAGE BAYS

Consider a Diffused Puck for Each Area That Needs Light

Shelves and dividers can block light from reaching the next compartment. In a cabinet with several separate bays, review each bay's coverage and cable path individually. A single light source above the cabinet does not establish useful coverage inside every section.

ARTCILUX A1127 is listed at 12V and 1.7W. Its 7.8 mm-thick body, milky diffuser and magnetic installation provide a different option from a focusing puck. Include the fixing assembly and cable exit when checking clearance below the shelf.

The deciding check: Is the soft light sufficient for the bay's depth and contents, and can the fitting be serviced after the cabinet is assembled?

LAYOUT 3 / A CONTINUOUS SHELF OR WORKTOP

Start With a Linear Fitting for Light Along the Length

For a long shelf or kitchen work surface, a linear fitting lets you plan a light source along the required length. Review the whole run, including corners, cabinet joints and the point where the power cable enters.

ARTCILUX A220T.PC is listed at 12V and 6W/m, with a 5 mm width, customizable length and clip installation. Its PC cover guides the light. Confirm the full installation drawing before machining: the stated width alone does not specify groove depth or machining clearance.

The deciding check: Does the installed line illuminate the usable surface evenly, including the ends and cabinet joints?

Compare the Light on the Surface, Not Just the Wattage

Watts describe electrical power. To compare the lighting result, review lumen output, beam distribution and the light reaching the intended surface. A narrow beam can concentrate light in one area, while a linear fitting distributes its output along a run. Equal wattage does not establish equal coverage.

The FTC's explanation of lumens and watts provides a useful starting point for separating light output from energy use. For a cabinet project, ask for the selected fitting's photometric data and check a sample at the actual mounting distance.

A polished worktop can change the decision. Check both the light source and its reflection from the normal standing or seated position. A cover, a different mounting position or a different optical design may improve the result. Adding more lamps alone may leave the reflection problem unresolved.

For strip lighting, LED spacing and the diffuser affect how separate points of light appear. Waveform Lighting's discussion of channels, diffusers and reflected light shows why the surface finish matters. Test the complete fitting and its cover on the intended material.

Keep the specified color temperature consistent across a connected display or worktop. A1118, A1127 and A220T.PC each list 3000K, 4000K and 6000K options with Ra above 90. Compare the chosen option with the actual timber, paint, glass and merchandise before approving the sample.

    Compare the Complete Installed Assembly

A per-piece puck price and a per-meter strip price cannot establish which layout costs less. Price the complete cabinet: fixtures, fixing parts, covers or profiles, connectors, cable leads, power supply, controls and machining. Also review how the light source and driver can be reached for replacement.

    • For pucks: Count the required fittings and connection points. Confirm hole dimensions for recessed models or the complete fixing assembly for surface-mounted models.

    • For strip or linear lights: Specify the finished lengths, groove dimensions, cable exits and service access. Check whether the quoted item includes its cover, end parts and mounting components.

    • For either layout: Confirm the power supply voltage, load capacity, connector arrangement and any sensor or dimming requirements.

Use the Correct Unit When Planning the Load

    Planning ExampleCalculationListed Lamp Load
    Four A1118 fittings4 x 1W4W
    A 1.2 m A220T.PC length at its listed rating1.2 m x 6W/m7.2W

These are load calculations, not a comparison of equivalent brightness or coverage. Final driver selection also depends on other connected loads and the manufacturer's operating requirements.

Compare the matching cabinet LED driver options after choosing the lighting layout. For connection planning, refer to the cabinet lighting installation guide and the selected products' wiring diagrams.

Puck vs Strip Lighting: Common Questions

How far apart should cabinet puck lights be installed?

Spacing depends on the beam, distance to the surface, cabinet dividers and required coverage. Test the selected fitting in the actual layout. A spacing rule for a focused display light may produce a different result with a soft diffused puck.

Can puck lights and strip lights share one LED driver?

They can be considered for one supply when the selected products have compatible electrical requirements and the complete circuit stays within the driver, controller, hub and connector ratings. Confirm the wiring and control arrangement; matching voltage alone does not establish compatibility.

Can both formats be used in the same cabinet?

Yes, a design can use focused pucks for selected objects and linear lighting for surrounding shelves. Give each light a defined role, check reflections and keep the specified light color consistent. Separate control groups may be useful when the two effects need to operate independently.
