Making Light Part of Furniture

The company was founded in 2004. Four years later, a visit to the Milan Furniture Fair changed the direction we would follow for years to come.

In Milan, we noticed something that was still relatively new at the time: lighting was moving inside cabinets, wardrobes and storage systems. It was becoming part of the furniture itself.

Materials, hardware and furniture design were already highly developed, while integrated furniture lighting was still at an early stage. We were not looking at an opportunity to make another light. We were watching a new category take shape.

We entered the furniture lighting industry in 2010. In 2011, we established a dedicated furniture lighting factory. Our first facility was a very basic 250-square-meter workshop.

This was also when Artcilux began to take shape as a brand. The name combines Art and Lux — art and light. From the beginning, the idea was not to make lighting the hero, but to use light in service of design.

The furniture stays at the center. Good lighting helps it look its best.

A Partnership That Changed How We Thought

In 2012, TOTO’s Guangzhou team and Japanese quality-control staff approached us.

At the first factory audit, they arrived with a thick stack of supplier requirements. Given our size and management systems at the time, we were hardly the obvious choice for a major international customer. What moved the conversation forward was a product discussion.

In the bathroom cabinet they were developing, the lighting and a 220V heating film operated as two separate systems. We asked a simple question: if the heating film were also available in 12V, could both functions be brought into one low-voltage control system? They called the supplier on the spot. The answer was yes.

We then began developing the S1003 gesture sensor switch and recessed linear lighting for the project. Prototyping lasted more than a year. Tolerances were measured down to the millimeter. The work was demanding, the margins were thin, and people inside the company questioned whether the project was worth continuing.

We finished it anyway.

That experience stayed with Artcilux. What customers need is not simply a product that works on its own, but a solution that remains reliable, easy to install, easy to use and ready for mass production once it becomes part of the furniture.

From Products to Systems

In the early years, we still thought product by product: how to make a switch easier to use, a luminaire slimmer, or a structure more refined.

The more projects we completed, the clearer the real challenge became. Furniture lighting is not difficult because of any single light. Power supplies, switches, sensors, connectors, profiles, furniture structures and installation methods all have to work together. If one part breaks the chain, the problem eventually lands with the customer.

By 2015, we began building the system more deliberately. We first strengthened the power-supply platform, then expanded into software and intelligent control. Switches and control products had already been part of our core capability from the beginning.

That shift changed Artcilux. We stopped asking only, “How do we make a better light?” and began asking, “How do we make it easier for furniture companies to get the entire lighting system right?”

Keep the complexity on our side. Make it simple for the user.

When a New Category Begins to Set Its Standards

In 2008, what we saw in Milan was still the beginning of a category.

More than a decade later, ShenChuan became the lead drafting organization for China’s national standard project, Technical Specification for Lighting Systems in Furniture, project No. 20251578-T-607. The project spans both furniture and lighting standardization systems and is currently under review and approval.

Artcilux has also accumulated more than 200 granted patents.

For us, the journey has come full circle: what once looked like a gap in the market is now becoming a field with clearer technical boundaries and industry rules.

Going Global

Artcilux entered Europe in 2014, with its first European customers coming from the Italian furniture industry.

From there, Artcilux products gradually reached more than 60 countries and regions. The Artcilux EU trademark was registered in 2017, followed by the U.S. trademark in 2018.

In 2025, Artcilux Lighting Inc. was established in the United States.

That does not mean globalization is complete. In many ways, the harder part is only beginning: moving beyond exporting products and bringing service, warehousing, technical support and local partnerships closer to the customer.

Lighting up Masterpieces

After all these years, Artcilux still comes back to the same idea we first recognized in Milan in 2008.

When a lighting system is truly well designed, people should notice the furniture before they notice the light.

They see the grain of the wood, the proportions of the cabinetry, the detail of the design and the atmosphere of the space.

That is what we mean by “Artcilux, Lighting up Masterpieces.”

The masterpiece is not the light itself. It is the work the light helps people see.
